Help Us Fine-Tune UBC’s New District Energy (DES) Hot Water System

Our ambitious conversion of UBC’s District Energy System (DES) from steam to hot water is almost complete. The colder than average weather this winter has been a good test of the new system; and, for the majority of campus users, the transition has gone well. However, like in any major project, deficiencies are to be expected. Some of those deficiencies have had a direct impact on heating performance within individual buildings. If you have been directly impacted by project-related deficiencies we thank you for your patience.

If you’re too hot or too cold—before you plug in a heater or a fan—we need you to tell us if something doesn’t seem typical for your building. Then we can determine the root cause and make any necessary adjustments while the new system’s components are likely still under warranty. The Energy & Water team and Building Operations are ready to respond.

The work on the DES hot water conversion is worth our patience and efforts; the system is already yielding operational cost savings and a significant reduction of UBC’s greenhouse gas emissions.
