Michael Smith Labs Aircuity

In 2019, Energy & Water Services completed the first install of an Aircuity system in BC, in the Michael Smith Labs building. The system samples laboratory spaces for common air contaminants, and reduces the amount of outdoor air delivered to the labs when safe. By reducing airflow requirements, heating and cooling loads at the building are reduced, as well as the fan power required to move air through the building. The system, along with other conservation measures designed to enhance Aircuity’s effectiveness, has led to a 33% reduction in lab airflow. The project is now generating around $100,000 in recurring energy savings each year, and its success has led to to the expanded use of the technology at UBC and at other institutions in BC.
